music video spotlight

My mom found this guy - Steve Grand - and sent me this video. Everybody everywhere should watch it, and I know I'm late on this bandwagon but as a part of the LGBTQIA community it's important. It makes me feel really sad and just - ugh. Everyone hates rejection, no matter who it's from, so in that way, we're all kinda the same, right? And yet the comment hate (which is obviously going to happen, I'm not an idiot, but it's still not right or necessary) makes it different, or tries to.

Anyway, it's also an awesome video/song that tells a sweetly sad story. And it (thematically) reminds me of Bonnie McKee's American Girl, so that's always a good thing in my book.

HERE WE GO

SO.

Sorry about the huge hiatus, blog name changes, all that good stuff. I'm back this time FOR GOOD.

2014 is going to be MY year. Here's the resolutions list:

  1. Keep this blog up-to-date and running (at LEAST 1 post/week)
  2. Get back to my pre-high-school weight
  3. Get a car :)
  4. Go someplace new
  5. Have an awesome birthday
  6. Be healthier!!!!!

As you can see, #1 is a huge priority. Last semester was just so tough that I couldn't do it all - blogging and school and social life and the limited exercise I scheduled in - but I think it's honestly really good for me, even if my friends bring up some of my entries like erryday.

In short, theheartstrong is back! YAY <3

music video friday ayy

I used to be really into music videos, but my love affair with cute vids didn't last through college. I just do NOT have enough time anymore.

But I'm really glad I turned on the TV to watch VH-1 while I "study" this morning - because I saw my new favorite music video ever. EVER. AND I know I pimp HAIM on this site all the time, but babes, you HAVE TO watch this. It'll make you smile. It'll make your heartbreak hurt less. It makes sense, and it makes me happy. SO WATCH NOW. It's funny too.

Haim - The Wire

The second video I have to share with you today is another Bonnie McKee gem, perfect for Halloween. I really like this chick, you guys - I hope I get to see her in concert, and that she gets some of the recognition she deserves. American Girl kind of flew under the radar, but it shouldn't have, because it was a damn good pop song - better than Call Me Maybe, in my opinion.

Watch away! HAPPY FRIDAY! 14 days til va-KATE-tion!

QUOTE THURSDAY: parents edition.

Hello lovelies (:

These are all from my parents, from our foliage trip around New England last weekend. Yes, they have stories behind them. If you're super interested just ask me!

Anyways - enjoy! Happy quote Thursday!

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Quick updates (from class-excuse formatting)

just a couple things to come this week:

i need to recap the weekend - foliage and insanity with the family. I love New England so much I can hardly stand it.

Quote Thursday RETURNS this week - a special edition featuring my parents!!

Poetry will begin to go live on the blog at some point. I've been writing a lot more.

Lush reviews will continue through the season, into Christmas. I just got new stuff in the mail too!

There are 16 days until my va-KATE-tion! Meaning I have 16 days to trim down to fit in the tiniest skirt ever. Diet updates will be coming very often, maybe twice or three times a day.

Look forward to a very active end-of-October on here!!

Bad(ish) News

Hey guys - quick update before practice - I WILL be blogging later, probably from the bathtub. YAY

Quote Thursday is being postponed indefinitely, until I get more quotable things from my friends. This may not happen until I get back home, considering the very sad predicament I'm in with my "friends" here.

But maybe not - my two lovely littles may provide some quotes as soon as next week!

Anyway, thanks for your patience. More beauty reviews and diet stories to come. I gotta get my waistline in check before Halloween - maybe these freakin boys should give me less candy (except not actually at all haha thanks guys :D).

lush: the wuss

So, I've had a very painful and trying weekend/past week. Ask me about it in person, I'll dish. Basically losing friends and dignity sucks (intrigued, right? Yep).

Anyways, this called for me ordering things online while having no pants on, and that meant I spent WAY too much money on Lush stuff (again), but it's kind of OK because they had my favorite cleanser again and I jumped on that shit immediately.

I also splurged on like a million Retro bath treats. Cause the only things that really calm me down on campus, that are legal, are baths and tea - and I go to the Lush store by me like all the time anyway, so I figured if it was an online-order, I'd stick to Retro.

LITTLE DID I KNOW that 2 of my favorite things ever would be in the Retro section: the wuss, and Hot Milk (also Ice Hotel, but I already knew this).

I didn't take any pictures cause I was TOO BUSY ENJOYING THIS
You guys - oh my God - I love man-smells, I love the smell of coffee. I hope coffee grounds are still in my hair from the bath. I hope the martini scent never goes away. I sat there until all the bubbles went away before washing my hair - to enjoy myself and take in the scent (and listen to Vessels) - and they lasted like 30 minutes. The smell, every time I caught a strong whiff of it, made me sigh. It was absolute heaven. I don't know what's so wrong with me that I like the "weirdest" Lush bubble bar, but I DO AND IT'S GONE AND I WANT MORE ),:

If you have any information on the whereabouts of the wuss, please, PLEASE let me know. It's my new favorite thing. Get it for me. Please.

Reviews of Hot Milk and Ickle Baby Bot are coming! <3 you for being patient.
xoxo, hshb,

PS: Check out this blog I wanna make some of the recipes she has they look like delicious fun.

PPS: My parents are coming with me to a formal Friday.

PPPS: My top Lush products, in no particular order:

  1. Let the Good Times Roll Cleanser
  2. The Smell of Weather Turning Perfume
  3. the wuss bubble bar
  4. French Kiss bubble bar
  5. Hot Milk bubble bar
  6. Oatifix/Cupcake fresh face masks (equally great, only available in-store)
  7. Ice Hotel bubble bar

Get me these as presents thanxxxx

ex. haus. ted.

well. I KNOW I MISSED QUOTE THURSDAY. I know this blog is suffering. I'm not giving up. I don't care if the next 3 posts are like "I'm sorry I suck," cause I like blogging when I have time. I just haven't had time.

Last night I slept for 12 hours, the night before that I slept for 0. I have serious academic pressure, social STIGMA (seriously...learned about this yesterday. On a date. why though, why), a general sick feeling (although that could be related to general STRESS), and a major issue with my romantic life. Like, major. Like so major I can't post about it on the internet. [which is crazy big right? aren't you interested in the gossip now? hahahahha]

anyways, i will get quotes up sometime, someday, as an apology.
and maybe eventually i can get you up to speed on the party scene, and the drama scene.

Oh, I'm so busy

Sorry for not posting a lot. School is terrible. But my whole life is different after last weekend's fiasco, so I'll be sure to update everyone.

Anyways...TEA.

I've been a Twinings girl for years, before I knew what coffee was, before I fell in love with tofu, before I had my first boyfriend (yeah, a LONG time ago). I love tea. It calms me down, makes me happy. It helps quell bad memories when they surface. It reminds me of home, without making me terribly homesick (like those awesome ocean-scented candles Witch City Wicks sells. I almost started crying when I brought Sea Mist up to my nose).

HOWEVER - I've never been much into loose teas. Until last week.

A few weekends ago, I happened upon a loose-leaf tea shop. I've never been convinced to make the plunge (it's messy and complicated without like all the expensive tools), but these people...damn. It's like they tailor-made their products for a Boston Candice.

MY MUG I LOVE IT MORE THAN PEOPLE LBH

  1. Their mug. PERFECT. I was skeptical, but not only is the animal mug ADORABLE, it's so easy. I've taken it to my morning classes every day this week.
  2. Their teas. They have everything, and I'm picky. Like, very picky. I'm not an oolong or rooibos person. I don't usually drink green teas (they have to be strongly flavored otherwise). I like black teas, and herbals with lots of honey.
  3. I'm obsessed with autumn in Boston. I would say summer is my favorite season, because of the parties, and the freedom, but in NE it's all about fall. And their fall teas this year...damn. I've had the set for almost a week now, and I've tried them all, and they're ALL BRILLIANT.
fall collection box <3

Sugar & Spice is my go-to morning tea. It's the black tea that I bring to my classes. At first taste I didn't like it, but now it makes me really happy to have it in my class. It smells so great, everyone likes it.

Mom's Apple Pie is a green tea (which I don't normally drink) that tastes like a hug. I have it if I need a caffeine kick later in the day and I don't feel like a heavy black tea.

Pumpkin Chai...mmmm. Now I'm not a big chai fan either (I'm really white you guys), but this blend is fantastic. This is a stea or a morning tea or anytime I'm feeling depressed tea [which is right now you guys...more on this later]. It's like a fall embrace of my insides. Lighting a fall-scented candle while drinking it is required.

Pistachio Cream is the herbal tea go-to. I like herbal teas, and I love pistachios, but this is the weakest of the bunch. Still solid (and great for before bed), but I'm not sure I would buy a tin of this.

Coco Berry is a mate, which I've never had before now, and it scared the crap out of me before I tried it. A stimulant?? Is this cocaine? Answer: no, not really, but it's a tea to drink when you NEED a heavy kick in the butt, and you can afford the caffeine fall-out in a couple of hours. I can't drink this in the morning - I'll be all jittery and then die by 12pm. Very important side-note, it's absolutely chocolatey deliciousness. It makes you want more and more...maybe it is a drug.

So all in all, that's my review of David's Tea and their fall collection!! Definitely try Pumpkin Chai, Sugar and Spice, and if you can handle mate, Cocoberry. Also, the mystery tea they're giving away with all the orders now is FANTASTIC.

If you ever wanna buy me a gift, or need a review of a tea...I'll be your test-bunny (:

IM SORRY

I know I haven't blogged in a week.

I know it's Quote Thursday.

I know I've been to like a million concerts and parties that I need to inform the Internet about.

I've been shopping, seen more of Boston, had awkward (read: amazing) conversations/encounters, been through a trilogy of parties.

I want to update you. I need to update this for myself, cause I want to remember!!

And yet...when you spend the weekend partying all night, sleeping all day, and the only thing remotely productive you do is watch Party Monster, you tend to get behind on things.

I have 2 huge things to do for tomorrow, and I have practice tonight. I PROMISE tons more content will go live tomorrow.

Also, quick update: I will be seeing Michael Buble tomorrow. Jealous? Thought so mothereffers.

Last minute...QUOTE THURSDAY!

LITERALLY SO LAST MINUTE. SO last minute. Why? Cause besides SBF, I've had the WORST DAY EVER. I mean, he's been hanging out in an airport for like 20 hours, and I've been here trying to work on homework but really just being worried about him. Oh, and about homework...I'M UP TO MY EYEBALLS IN IT, SO THAT'S BEEN A FUN TIME.

Anyway, here's dem quotes. The special thing about this Thursday (besides it being, you know, pratically Friday), is that a few of them are actually from Boston people!! Who knew.

[The last one's a joke, you humorless bitches.]

So I'm going to watch cartoons, then read a book, then go to bed. Peace, my homies. I'll update you on the party situation later.

#bestdayever

As you all know because you read my blog so carefully, the day started out very Catholic with Mass, and then brunch and a bit of homework reading stuff. THEN I made my way to the SoWa open market (with a short stop at Raven Used Books on Newbury along the way...and yes, I did walk to SoWa from Cambridge, there's a lot of bridges to say the least), which I can break down for you into 4 distinct areas:
  • Food Trucks ERRYWHERE
  • Farmer's Market
  • Inside Vintage Explosion
  • Craft Stalls/Cool Shit that I can't come up with a name for cause it was all real different

In the beginning I just was kinda wandering and exploring, but I ended up spending most of my day around the "Cool Shit" area. Understandably, because the first thing I found was The Sims House Party, and I like geeked out and took a photo all excitedly in front of some hot guy who was weirded out, I think. His hand is in the picture.

would've bought but don't have the sims 1....damn EPs
The next thing I stumbled upon was a whole freaking STALL of things that once were alcohol bottles (yay), which had been obviously dranken and glass-blown into cool vases!! If only I had a boyfriend who got me flowers...and one of these vases. That's my dream guy, right there.

I took a pic of the upscale vases. no aristocrat plastic shit here
Then I wandered over to the farmer's market, and lo and behold, I found Mother Juice!! It was just a lone food truck separate from all the madness of the "Food Truck" area, which is probably good cause I didn't like the crowds of grilled-cheese eating people at the Food Truck part. I didn't take a pic of my juice cause I got the wrong one, and it wasn't very good. I wanted something REALLY refreshing, but it was kale-based, which just left a weird taste in my throat. Bleh. But I would totes go back and order right next time, cause they didn't give any ice which I LOVE because it means you're not paying top $$$ for frozen water.

end-of-day ice coffee pumpkin ice cream float. cause i deserved it you asshats.
Then I bought some cool shit from that area, INCLUDING the VANESSA CARLTON CD WITH 1,000 MILES ON IT FOR $1, and a bomb-ass vest that I'll review later when I actually wear it out. I rounded the day off with an ice-cream-coffee-float (awesome - from Cookie Monstah) and a very weird MBTA train ride. Right on.

and yes, i am a witch

Oh, and I bought this sick candle. It's fall harvest scented <3

So basically, I know what I'm doing next Sunday. Ready, SBF?
hehe.

sched for today. and a picture for no reason

After a cathardic and enjoyable trip to 8am Mass at St. Cecilia's, I'm going to do some homework [for my Music of Africa class, how hipster cool am I lol you jeally], then head on out to the SOWA Open Market, for the first time, even though I've been around Boston for 2 years!!

On the list of things I wanna do is shop for vintage, drink some Mother Juice, and maybe get a cookie or something from another food truck. Also I love to check out farmer's markets anyway, so I'll see if I can pick something up for the room.

Other than that, I will probably end up spending most of the day in front of the TV. YAY TV!

throwback to a candice with purple hair. you're welcome.

concert schedule for me for this semester.

Just thought I'd throw this up right now. Sorry I've been so hideously boring recently!! I didn't even go out last night, and it was a Friday. Yikes.

Anyway, on with the schedule/links/good stuff that I got planned. If you like this stuff, feel free to come!! Comment if you'd like to come/hang out/meet me in person if you don't know me. I've met enough sketchy people in life to not be afraid of some internet kids who read my blog posts about nerds and beauty products.

Thursday, September 19 -ICONA POP @ PARADISE ROCK CLUB [currently sold out...check stubhub my peeps]

Monday, September 23 - OH LAND @ BRIGHTON MUSIC HALL

Friday, October 4 - THE BALLROOM THIEVES @ THE SINCLAIR

Saturday, October 19 - CYNDI LAUPER @ CITI WANG THEATRE

WOW ONLY 4?????? What am I doing with my life?

I do tend to go to shows spontaenously though (I saw Richard Youngs the other day and met him and it was crazy awesome), so I'll probs keep you in the "scene" loop if I'm hitting up anything else. Also I'll definitely add lots more shows once fall ball for lacrosse ends - November should see me not only take an epic va-KATE-tion, but also attending more shows. Unfortunately (and I know I'm rambling now, but still), I won't be able to see Janelle Monae on October 16, but you should TOTALLY GO if you can. She's great - listen to her too.

Alright that's all for me right now!! Hopefully shit picks up around here...these nerds can get REALLY F*CKING a little boring. At least I learned this week that I'm not as awkward as my ex-boyfriends I think I am.

Quote Thursday...from school!

Hey all! I know this is a late posting, but I've been busy skyping my home friends highlighting 2 pages of my econ textbook doing nothing!! So, without further ado, here's this week's QUOTE THURSDAY, fresh from Boston but featuring quotes from home!!

It was pretty good....hopefully after a weekend here some Bostonian-y friends can contribute (:

Stay cute!

why i was sad today

Ok, so many people, both who I knew and who I did not, saw me crying today.

And I'd kind of like to just announce a fact about myself: I do NOT like being touched, when I'm not aware of it. Like, if a friend attacks me to hug me, that makes me feel uncomfortable. If someone rubs against me/pushed by me while walking by me, it makes me VERY uneasy. This has been pretty true all my life, but since a few sexual assaults happened, it's gotten worse.

I know I had a lot of people around me at events today, and I tried to be just nice and whatever, but then one of my friends grabbed at my face, and I lost my head. Physically it feels bad - very bad - to be touched when I'm not expecting it. Almost like painful.

So I might have over-reacted, but I just felt like explaining a bit. It's a very accepted, girly thing to attack your friends, and on other people, it's adorable - but I'm not normal like that. And I think that should be ok, although maybe flipping out and breaking down isn't the best way to cope.

Sorry to everyone who I snapped at!

HAIM

The only picture I thought to take. #dancedtoohard

Last night I was lucky enough to attend the sold-out HAIM concert at Paradise Rock Club in Boston. It's the first of many concerts I am going to this semester (I'll post my schedule later sometime), and WOW. What a way to shake my depression of last week.

HAIM is a indieish-rockish-popish-folky band of 3 sister + 1 guy drummer, and man, those girls are talented like nothing I've ever seen. Like, the most talented musicians I've seen on a stage - they did it all - all three of them sang lead at some point in the concert, they KILLED it on guitar, and there was this drum encore part that literally BLEW ME AND S'S MIND. I don't know how they could physically have that much energy and yet still be so precise and rhythmically synced.

My favorite part of the concert was when they played Don't Save Me and then Forever immediately after that. They were sick you guys. Like true rockers. The lead for most of the concert (I'm pretty sure her name is Danielle) was soooooo cool. She wore this leather jacket and just was so genuinely talented & fun & cool. I wanna be in their family.

In other words, it was absolutely amazing, from the venue to their clothes to the fact that I can't really hear today. The girls were just so cool - rockers for real, they didn't try to be sexy or pretty or whatever, but they were just cause they were so talented!! Like....I have a major girl crush on ALL of them. :D

On another note....I know at least 2 friends who had tickets (1 I bought a ticket for....), who just didn't like, want to go at the last minute and fucking either DID NOTHING or PLAYED LAZER TAG instead. I don't know what kinda fucking drugs these people are on, but they done missed OUT. Like that was worth my 25$ absolutely!!! Why wouldn't you go to a concert??? You can play loser laser tag any time!

So yeah...that like blows my mind too. LAME. I would be PISSED if I missed out on this....thank God for Paradise Rock Club and HAIM!

xoxo, hshb,
candy

Ps. If you wanna listen to them & another band I'm going to later this semester (The Ballroom Thieves), here's a link to my "concert prep" playlist on Spotify. It'll have more bands soon, as I update it.

DONT SAVE ME

OH MY GOSH.

I have just witnessed the most crazy, talented, fun group of sisters I've ever seen in my entire life. And they were on a stage. 10 feet in front of me. Playing the BEST SONGS EVER.

But seeing as I am in a sorority (Sigma Kappa), I need sleep to function at recruitment tomorrow. I will fill you in with the 1 picture I took (what?? I was busy DANCING!!) bright & early tomorrow morning.

Thanks for being patient with me guys. <3,

#VEGAN

Yes, it is true.

I am now a vegan. Like, as in, I made this decision yesterday while eating chicken, and starting this morning I am vegan.

Why? Honestly, a lot of reasons. One is that I've gained back every single pound I lost this summer in one week in Europe. Possibly due to pounds of butter, duck, cheese, and alcohol.

But there are others. I used to have a somewhat restricted diet, and I think it's better for you by far. I felt better when I didn't eat meat, and I had less acne. I think I also maintained a lower weight without all this yo-yo-ing, dieting then gaining then losing then gaining. When you have serious food rules in place, you have a much better time of avoiding "bad" foods.

And also....I really like animals. And I would like them to be humanely treated. AND I KNOW THAT'S A STUPID HIPPIE THING TO SAY. I know, I'm a crunchy hippie. But I'm not going to be preachy, I'm just saying for my own pysche, I don't want to eat something that I don't know how it was treated. And I already think about chemicals on my veggies...so yeah. It's a piece of mind choice, for my own sake, I think. And also Aang does it. So, yeah.

Anyway, I'm chronically my journey into vegan-hood. In numbers. As in, I have like 2 pimples on my face now. Maybe 3. I don't know. We'll see how that changes. #science

ALSO I may be doing a juice cleanse. Or getting a juicer. WEEEEEEE

Yeah I'm back from Vacation

And I learned a whole lot. Basically that there's a lot of legal alcohol in Europe. Which would explain my last post. Kind of. I don't know anymore.

I also learned I am not a good flyer. I already knew this, but basically I can't take connecting flights. I need direct, or I'll have a panic attack.

I learned EasyJet (Europe's cheap-ass flight line) SUCKS MAJOR. More on this later, but this is NOT the Europe twin of JetBlue. JetBlue is the best thing in the world, this shit just SUCKS OMG.

I made a new friend, D, who I'll be quoting on Thursday most likely.

I learned that I don't like London all that much (sorry London).

I learned that I like ale much better than beer, which kinda sucks cause you can't really get ale in America I think, but I don't really know anymore.

I learned that NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU TRY TO LOSE WEIGHT BEFORE A TRIP, IT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE FRANCE WILL FORCE YOU TO GAIN IT ALL BACK AND MORE. I'm serious. Constant drink + cheese + bread = FATTY CANDICE.

So back to the juice cleanses before school. And the sims. I need to effing chill out for a few days and stare at a wall.

peace, hshb,

JORDAN

Fucking text me, Jordan. I'm drunk in Paris and I MISS YOU. We need to do this. On Sarah and me's honeymoon, we gonna do this. You ARE my Man of Honor. And Kate is my Maid of Honor.

Love you baby, from Paris.
